While there is no real International standard for “raw food”, because of the diverse resources of the earth and human beings involved in its production, we have a very good idea of what kinds of raw foods are acceptable to eat. Foods considered to be raw are berries, fruits, nuts, fish, meat, eggs and any other food sources that were not cooked before consumption. Dried foods are also considered to be raw. This does not necessarily mean that it is uncooked or even not appropriate to eat. Dried foods can be made with fresh foods but usually are not considered to be truly raw.
The practice of true raw food often does not allow for people to get into the proper nutritional allowance required by modern societies. For instance, many people consume refined foods like pasta and bread that are high in carbohydrates. These foods were definitely not considered to be a complete meal when not cooked. In this sense, pasta and bread are considered to be a part of a diet that is considered to be a true raw food diet. Foods that were considered to be cooked and were foods that were thoroughly cooked include vegetables, spices, soups, meals and cereals.
When you are considering true raw food diet it is important to understand that this does not mean you will have food all the time. You will most likely eat 3-5 times a day with a large variation from day to day and from week to week. For instance, on weekdays, I will eat pork, chicken, beef and rice on Sat and Sunday; on mon, wed and fri I will eat chicken, rice, beef and Sat. Basically it is important to understand that this does not mean that you will eat a diet that is heavy on meats and fats. This diet is more concerned with food staples and whole grains.
Another question that you might have is how do you go out to eat at a restaurant. I have been a professional chef for fourteen years, and offer these ideas to my clients.
1. Find a U.S. based restaurant that is a good value. Choose a restaurant that has a menu that is reasonable. Check out the menu online before you go. You might want to find out what is on the menu that you have been looking for. Dine in Supper because eating out is cheaper and more convenient than eating in.
2. Find a U.S. based restaurant that offers International cuisines. Restaurants that offer international foods are usually more expensive than regular restaurants. Yet, they provide a larger variety of foods. International restaurants usually have newer, fresher ingredients. Also, you can determine whether a restaurant is including neighborhood favorites in their dishes. Usually restaurants that are local have a more limited assortment of foods and are not as inexpensive as international restaurants.
3. Everyone likes to eat out once in a while. Don’t always go out every week. Take time to relax and enjoy your time away from the stresses on the job. Once in a while, you might also find yourself at an expensive restaurant and you owe it to yourself to try it, but try your best to limit your temptations.
Eating out is expensive, so plan carefully so you don’t spend more than you can afford. Just be sure to be wise with your money and try to have fun while you are out.
